Newsletter Term 2 Week 5 (27.5.22)
Dear Parents
Thank you to all those families who supported the school and parish and joined in the Parish Picnic day recently. Despite the weather not being perfect everyone managed to enjoy a few hours of fun and entertainment. It was great to have our choirs finally able to sing in public so we were appreciative that so many turned up on the day. It was also great that St Ambrose school brought their band and choirs along too. I know Fr Paul was delighted with the turn out and it really was a great way to celebrate his 70th birthday. After the last couple of years, it was nice to finally be able to gather as a larger community. I am sure the organising committee will be looking to hold similar functions in the future.
The weather continues to play havoc with us. The Netball Gala Day which was due to be held on Thursday this week has had to be postponed until early next term as the grounds have just been too wet. The positive side of this is that it gives the competitive school team more time to practise! At this stage the AFL Gala Day will still go ahead next Tuesday. If there is any change to this, parents will be advised. There is also a Hockey day scheduled for 17th June so fingers crossed that it is still able to be held. These sports events are for students in the older years. We are pleased to be able to offer students a variety of sport experiences, especially considering there have been few opportunities in the past couple of years.
Some Year 6 students recently had the opportunity to participate in a Retreat day, called Incitare, with other selected Year 6 students from our Catholic schools in the Tweed. I believe those who went thoroughly enjoyed the experience and we look forward to them sharing their reflections on this day.
Year 6 leaders were invited to the Grip Leadership day which was held at Twin Towns last week. It is a day for leaders from all primary schools in the area to come together and be inspired to lead their peers in an action project in their school. We look forward to them sharing their ideas with the rest of the school.
Mary the Mother of Jesus is honoured with many titles, including “Help of Christians” and as such she is patroness of Australia. On May 24th each year the church celebrates this feast day. The early church in Australia was without priests for many years yet the people remained faithful. They prayed to Our Lady for intercession and help during this time, so it was fitting that the first Cathedral in Sydney was named in her honour and she was also named as patroness of our country. The Church prays that through Our Lady’s intercession that God will grant wisdom to our leaders and integrity to our citizens so that under her protection Australia may be granted harmony, justice and peace.
During the week we were visited by teachers from St Finbarr’s at Byron Bay, including Lauren Magnus our previous Leader of Pedagogy, who is currently acting Assistant Principal there. Lauren continues to remind us of the great things we do here at St Anthony’s and she wanted some of the team at her new school to witness this also. At the end of their visit the Byron teachers told us how “amazing” our school was and how inspired they felt. They congratulated us on our students’ politeness and friendliness and their ability to articulate their learning. Sometimes it is good to have outsiders remind us of the great things we continue to do at our school and how well our students are engaged in their learning.
As indicated in a Compass message sent out during the week we have had to postpone School Photos until Monday 25th July (Week 2 next term). We simply do not have the space that the photographers require at this stage with a number of our rooms unavailable.
We have been advised not to use the music room for the remainder of this term. The growth of mould in this room is not good. We have discovered that water is pooling under the slab. We have had workmen pumping it out this week. They have been inspecting the room and it will undergo some repairs, along with the library, the carpet will be replaced and it will also be given a deep clean. We expect all works to be completed by the end of the term. Unfortunately, this will mean some disruption to some music lessons.
“The faces of holiness are as many as the faces of Australians. Whoever we are and wherever we find ourselves in this ancient Southern Land we call home, we are all children of a loving God.”
Enjoy the weekend. Let’s hope the sun keeps shining!
God bless
Lynne
