Newsletter Term 1 Week 9 (1.4.22)
Dear Parents
We appreciate the amazing support from everybody towards our fundraising efforts last week to support our own families who were significantly impacted with the floods. Over $3500 was raised and this will be used for vouchers for those families. We hope to finalise our “bundles of joy” next week to let people know we care about them and have kept them in our thoughts and prayers. After such a traumatic time we figured a little bit of joy from our school community would help put a smile on people’s faces again.
It was good to see lots of parents taking the opportunity to meet with their child’s teachers in parent/teacher meetings during the past couple of weeks. It is important that information is shared to support students to be the best they can be. Parents may always contact teachers through Seesaw or you are welcome to make an appointment if you want to meet face to face with the teachers more often.
Yesterday Year 6 visited Mt St Patrick College for a “Taster Day”. By all accounts students really enjoyed the day experiencing high school life. Science and Woodwork were very popular from what I have been told.
The school Cross Country event will be held in our grounds next Friday morning. Everyone will walk the course first. Cross country is held in age groups (the age the child turns in 2022). The 12/13 years will be held first followed by 11 years then 10 years. Next will be the 8/9 years who run together as that is how it is run at Zone level. 7 years, 6 years and 5 years will follow after that. Students may wear a shirt in their house colour if they have one or their normal school sports shirt otherwise.
After the cross country there will be a sausage sizzle lunch for $2 per sausage on a piece of bread. Order forms will be sent home next week. There will be no lunch orders at the canteen on Friday however students may purchase other things (drinks, ice tubes, yoghurt etc) afterwards and at recess. Parents are welcome to join in the day and indulge in a sausage or two as well!
Next Tuesday evening in the church commencing at 6pm there will be a special communal service for the Sacrament of Penance/Reconciliation. A number of students from Year 4 and above will receive this Sacrament for the first time. We assure them of our prayers on this important occasion. This is a Parish celebration and all are welcome to attend. There will be quite a few priests on hand for individual confessions.
Students have been learning about the events of Holy Week in the lead-up to Easter, in their religion lessons. This year Holy Week and Easter fall during the holidays. Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday and commemorates Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem on a donkey, before his Last Supper with the apostles and then his arrest and death on the cross ahead of his Resurrection which we celebrate at Easter – a time of great joy and hope. Older students have been learning about the different liturgical colours for the various commemorations during this time.
In case there is no newsletter next week I would like to thank parents for their continued support during this topsy-turvy term! Covid and the floods have certainly taken their toll on all of us. But as people of hope we are confident that next term will be better and we will get back on track and feel like things are “normal” again. There’s always hope!
Term 2 will begin on Tuesday 26th April. Enjoy the holidays with your children! Don’t forget that daylight saving ends this weekend!
When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive – to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love. God’s spirit is close to us when we love.
God bless
Lynne

On Thursday 31st March, Year 6 students visited Mount St Patrick's College in Murwillumbah to experience the high school setting.
The students had a tour of the College and had the opportunity to meet many of the teachers and members of the school leadership team including Principal, Paul Reidy. They took part in a variety of engaging activities such as science experiments and technology and design activities.
They also had a taste of the computer technology and animation software available. Year 6 students and teachers are grateful to Mount St Patrick's for welcoming us into their impressive school with such warmth and enthusiasm.
A fantastic day was had by all.
