Newsletter Term 2 Week 7
Dear Parents
This weekend a number of our students will be receiving their First Holy Communion. This is a very important and holy day for these children and their families. In the Catholic tradition we talk about receiving the life-giving body and blood of Jesus when we receive communion. When we receive Holy Communion we are intimately united with Jesus, every time we do this. This Sacrament is also uniting us with the wider church community. We congratulate all those making this Sacrament for the first time this weekend and in the coming weeks. We pray that they will always remember that God’s love is there to comfort, guide and bless them throughout their lives.
The 9.00am Mass this Sunday is a designated school Mass. We encourage ALL families to come along and participate. There will be a children’s liturgy where children will hear the readings at their level and do an associated activity. We are hoping to get a children’s choir happening at our school Masses again in the near future.
With World Environment Day tomorrow our environment leaders decided to celebrate today with a mufti day and cleaning up the playground. Any money raised will go towards plants and gardening utensils.
Our Athletics Carnival will be held on Tuesday 8th June. Everyone will be involved in a variety of activities throughout the day. 8 year olds and above will compete in field and track events and the younger children will have some non-competitive fun activities to enjoy. A canteen will be operating. Donations of cakes and slices will be appreciated. Parents are welcome to come along and watch their children.
Teachers are very busy writing reports at the present time. We are compelled by government to provide a graded report (A-E) for all students twice a year unless they have a disability, when parents may request an ungraded report. Unfortunately reports can be a source of angst for parents, students and their teachers. In this day and age, a C is considered to mean a child is meeting the standard required for that grade. A and B are above and D and E are below that standard. Teachers provide many opportunities for students to meet the standard or to show they are achieving beyond it. There will be an opportunity for parents to meet with teachers either at the end of this term or early next term to gain more information about how their child is progressing. I encourage you to book in for an interview when these become available.
Three of our students are heading to Sydney on Tuesday as members of the Diocesan Cross Country team. We wish them all the best and know they will be worthy ambassadors of our school, zone and Diocese. Good luck Harper Gallagher, Harper Richards and Fray Hutchinson.
Our students have had lots of sporting opportunities in recent times. We have certainly been making up for last year! A big thank-you to Fiona Croker who has taken on the sports co-ordinator role this year. It is a thankless task at times. We do appreciate all that she does in organising all the opportunities for the students.
Please be aware that some of our families are going through some difficult times at present, through ill-health, housing difficulties or lack of work. I ask you to keep all our families in these situations in your thoughts and prayers.
To bless is to see well. In blessing it is important that we see, that we recognise others, for our seeing tells them they count.
May God bless all our families,
Lynne

TEACHERS ARE LEARNERS TOO
You may have noticed the classrooms here look a little different to when you went to school. Here at St Anthony’s we encourage powerful learning, collaboration and success for all. We believe in providing a holistic student centered learning environment that focuses on inquiry learning and skills development. This approach is based upon decades of research about inquiry based learning, personalised learning and social constructivism.
Last Monday and Tuesday our Stage 3 Teachers along with Mrs Sue Falcke (Leader of Catechesis), Mrs Lauren Magnus (Leader of Pedagogy) and Mrs Pull (Principal) attended a 2 day workshop titled “Rigorous Project Based Learning by Design”. This workshop was led by Mr Michael McDowell, an internationally renowned educator, speaker and author. Due to COVID Michael zoomed in from San Francisco to work with school teams across the diocese on this powerful approach to teaching and learning.
This way of learning not only fosters clarity of learning outcomes and leveled success criteria at surface, deep, and transfer. But it also challenges students at their learning level through targeted instruction and feedback and provides a culture that focuses on students taking ownership over their learning.
We are very excited to implement this new approach and see the impact it has on further developing confident and competent learners.

Leader of Pedagogy
