Newsletter Term 4 Week 1 (13.10.22)
Dear Parents
I am delighted to be back at school and able to welcome students and families for Term 4. I had a wonderful time away overseas and feel refreshed and renewed ready to face the demands of a busy fourth term! I would like to acknowledge Mr Kennedy who took on the principal role in my absence and the other members of the Leadership Team who supported him.
I was at the Gold Coast airport early on Monday morning to farewell the Year 6 students and the staff accompanying them on the Sydney/Canberra trip. By all accounts they have had a great time but I am sure they will be very tired on their arrival home this afternoon. We really thank the teachers, Mrs Naylor, Mrs Wallis, Mrs Midson and Mr Judd, who have been on duty all week looking after the students. No doubt there will be great stories to hear on their return. I am so glad that this trip was able to go ahead this year. I would also like to publicly thank Vivian and Andrew Moloney through their travel agency for all the assistance they provided in sourcing the flights for the group and also for being so accommodating when changes had to be made, sometimes at short notice.
This Sunday we encourage all families to make a special effort to be at Mass at 9.00am. There will be a visiting priest who will also be talking about family groups and how they can build community in parishes. There will be morning tea after Mass and Children’s Liturgy will be on. Staff from the school will be involved with all the ministries at Mass.
Students who ride bikes to and from school have been reminded today to walk their bikes within the school grounds and to stay away from the church. Please assist us in reminding your children of this also.
Parents, it is law in this country that students must attend school unless they are sick or have a significant reason for not being there. If they are away, the school must be informed of the reason for the absence. I know our office ladies are dealing with this at the moment and chasing parents for the information. Please be vigilant in letting the school know so we can adjust our records. Student attendance is monitored at other levels beyond the school and we have been contacted as we currently have significant unexplained absences. Hence the reason for my request that you follow up this as soon as possible. If your child is away, please let the school know so we don’t have to call you. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
Unfortunately, Mr Kennedy has had to take some leave due to some health matters. He has been advised to stay away from school, which he is finding hard to do, but it is for his wellbeing. As you could imagine he is finding this a bit frustrating and he would also appreciate some privacy so that he doesn’t have to explain things to everyone. We hope and pray that he is able to get things back on track so that he can return to school as we do miss his bubbly fun-filled self! Mick has agreed to play guitar at Mass on Sunday for us. In the meantime, Mrs Julianne Barlogio will continue as the acting Assistant Principal in Mick’s absence
A warm welcome to two new students who have joined our school community this term. Arabella (Bella) Taylor is in Year 2, and Camille Hegedus is in Year 5. We also welcome their families and hope they find St Anthony’s to be a wonderful place for their girls to grow and flourish.
Kindergarten Orientation mornings have been set for 8th & 9th November. All families should receive this information this week.
Please advise us if your child will not be returning to St Anthony’s in 2023. We already have waiting lists in many classes so would appreciate knowing as soon as possible.
The last day for students this year will be Thursday, 15th December.
The riches that are in the heart cannot be stolen (Russian proverb).
May God bless us all
Lynne

ST ANTHONY’S CHURCH, KINGSCLIFF
SCHOOL FAMILY/ PARISH MASS CELEBRATION 9:00am
We hope to see many St Anthony’s families at this Mass celebration.
At this Mass celebration staff from St Anthony’s will be attending to the ministry duties and there will be children’s liturgy.
Fr Ray Sanchez, a dedicated member of the Passionist Family Group Movement, is visiting our parish for the whole weekend on 15/16 October. He will be celebrating at the Parish/School Masses and sharing with us the joy and sense of belonging that can be experienced through being part of a Family Group.
WHO CAN JOIN A FAMILY GROUP? ANYONE! Seniors, Young, Catholic or not, Married, Single, Widowed or Divorced - EVERYONE! Family Groups do not need to cut across existing friendships. Rather they add a new dimension to parish life which allows non-Catholic spouses, inactive Catholics and those who do not feel they truly “belong” to become part of your parish community. Family Groups provide a non-threatening atmosphere so that this can happen in a gentle way. There is no catch — we are just being what the church should be — family for each other Family Groups strive to meet the needs of the heart rather than the head and all Family Group activities are aimed at no cost or low cost, so that everyone can be included. Think about joining and tell your friends about it.
After the Sunday Masses (7:30am & 9:00am) next Sunday, there will Be a morning tea—there will be current family group members there to answer any questions. This was how the Church first began This is what it can be now “See how they love one another”
OCTOBER: The month of THE HOLY ROSARY
October 13 - National Day of the Rosary
By tradition, the Catholic Church dedicates the month of October to the holy Rosary, one of the best known of all Catholic devotions. October includes the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary (October 7). The best way to celebrate the month is, of course, to pray the Rosary. Prayer is a way to help us get in touch with God and to develop a relationship with him. In prayer, we not only talk with God, but God communicates with us, as we continue to pray, our relationship with God grows.
At school students will have the opportunity to experience walking/praying the Rosary in an indoor or outdoor quiet, reflective atmosphere within the school grounds.
Years 5 and 6 Hockey Gala Day
The 2022 Fitzpatrick Shield Years 5 & 6 Hockey Gala Day was held at the end of Term 3. The competition was a modified 6 a-side format played on smaller fields.
St Anthony’s entered 1 team in the competitive division, this was for experienced hockey players, and 5 teams in the non-competitive division where focus was more on fun and participation.
Congratulations to all the students who participated in the day and had a go at trying a new sport. Well done on your behaviour and sportsmanship.
Thank You to Mrs Golan and Mrs Burns who gave up their time to come along to the Gala Day to supervise and help coordinate the teams.
Summer 5 a-side Hockey
It’s not too late to register, players needed!!
Hockey Tweed will be running a 5 a-side mixed competition on a Wednesday afternoon for students in Years 3-6. Teams play on half a turf field with rebound boards. Experience is not necessary and if there is enough interest we can look at entering some St Anthony’s teams.
Hockey sticks and shin pads can be borrowed from the school. Students will need to provide their own mouthguards.
If your child is interested in playing please email the school at: sapkings@lism.catholic.edu.a

Tweed All Schools Rugby League Carnival
At the end of the last term, we had two teams participate in the annual Tweed All Schools Carnival. Both groups trained for several weeks to prepare for the carnival, working on skills and fitness. Under Mr. Tierney's coaching, the senior team competed very strongly in their four matches, winning one game and finishing very close in the other games.
The Junior team played three games, winning two and competed enthusiastically throughout the day. Several of the players had limited experience and we had our first junior girl, Cate Thierjung participating in the competition.
Congratulations to all players who participated on their enthusiastic participation and excellent sportsmanship displayed on the day.
In week four this term, we have a Rugby Union carnival at Casuarina, so training for this next carnival will begin next week.
Yours in footy,
Pat Tierney and Paul Monahan

Please look through through your shelves, under beds, your car anywhere you think a school library book might be.
Just drop them off to the office or the classroom for returning.
A BIG THANK YOU for all the books that have been returned.
The five-step test can help assess whether a child is ready to be safely restrained by a seatbelt. Answering Yes to each step means a child is ready for a seatbelt.
The child should be able to:
- Sit all the way back against the back of the seat
- Bend their knees comfortably over the front edge of the vehicle seat
- Sit with the sash belt across their mid-shoulder
- Sit with the lap belt across the top of their thighs
- Stay seated in this position for the whole trip
