Message from the Principal
Dear Parents
What a wonderful morning today to celebrate all our fathers and special father figures in our lives! Thank you to all the staff who came to school early to cook the bacon and eggs for breakfast. We hope you enjoyed them! It was lovely to see lots of dads and grand-dads stay for morning prayer and assembly. Year 1 told us why they loved their dads and then sang a sweet song to them. We were glad our Stage 3 choir were able to sing Ear Worm – which they sang at the eisteddfod last term and won 1st place. The choir has developed vocally and their performance show-cased their talent. I’m sure everyone was impressed. Stage 2 choir then joined them for Take Me Home Country Roads, a John Denver classic. Thanks to Mr Spurlock for all his work with the choirs. It’s great to have so many students involved in our choirs enjoying singing and learning different techniques.
Congratulations to Finn Carroll-Cinque on his excellent performance as a member of the NSW swimming team at the recent national age championships. Finn came home with two gold medals, a silver and a bronze. He came first in the 10 yrs individual medley, second in the 50m freestyle and 3rd in the 100m freestyle, as well as being a member of the winning NSW 4 x 50m relay team. Well done to Finn! Can’t wait to see him continue to excel in the years to come.
Congratulations to Billy Handisides and Kalani Favaro-Andreo who were members of the Polding soccer team at the recent PSSA carnival. The team finished 6th overall. Well done boys!
On Monday of this week a number of teachers with myself spent the day at St James’ Primary School at Banora Point. All Catholic schools from the Tweed were represented on this day. We have all been working with Lyn Sharratt, a well-known and celebrated educational leader from Canada, who has been working with schools in the Lismore Diocese for the past three years. Lyn is a big believer in collaborative processes as they empower both teachers and students to become more effective in both teaching and in learning as well ensuring continuous improvement. It was an affirming day for our staff as we collectively realised how far we have come at St Anthony’s and how closely aligned we are with St James. We will be looking to develop a closer partnership with their school to learn from and with each other.
Today about ten of our students have gone to Murwillumbah to join with other instrumentalists from other Tweed Catholic schools for a Band day. What a great opportunity for them all! We appreciate the music teacher from Mt St Pat’s for organising the day. Thanks to Mr Spurlock for encouraging our students to participate and to the parents who willingly agreed to transport them. I am sure the students will come back enthused to continue with practising and hopefully we will have a band performance before the end of the year.
Thank you to the parents who ran the Father’s Day stall yesterday and for organizing the raffle. Congratulations to all the winners.
Our next school hosted Parish Mass will be held on Sunday 10th September at 9.00am. All are welcome to come along but we particularly invite Stage 2 families to join us as it will be a Commitment Mass for those preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Please bring along something to share for morning tea after Mass. It should be a very special morning.
Congratulations to all the students who received the sacrament of Baptism during last Sunday’s Mass. What a joyful day for their families and for parishioners! It is great to see our faith alive in our community.
The Colour Fun Run will be held on Tuesday 19th September. It is going to be a fun-filled day. We appreciate all those students endeavouring to raise lots of money to support our school. There are some great prizes along the way and for every $2000 raised a staff member is slimed. And there were three good sports this morning! Many thanks Mr Judd, Mrs Croker and Mrs Plunkett for the entertainment! Let’s keep the excitement building. If students haven’t yet signed up, there is still time to do so. Currently Yr 2 is leading the way with the greatest amount raised so far and are on track to enjoy the VIP tent on the day! We have been wanting to do a colour run for a few years now and finally it is going to happen!
We pray for our fathers and all those who father; those who model, support, guide and mentor; who provide an occasional sounding board; who are fair and firm and fun; who make lame dad jokes; who barrack from the sidelines; who take the time to listen and who know when to leave well enough alone; who witness what it is to live with integrity and compassion. We thank God for the gifts bestowed on children by those who love them fearlessly, ferociously and forever.
Happy Fathers’ Day!
God Bless
Lynne

SOMETHING TO THINK AND PRAY ABOUT THIS WEEK

Great to Be Young
The third Jesuit preference is to ‘accompany the young in the creation of a hope-filled future’... Accompanying young people in the creation of a hope-filled future can be challenging. Apart from positive role models, what can be done to promote a hope-filled future for young people? The most obvious response is the opportunity for a young person to be supported in having as good an education and formation as possible, addressing all aspects of the human person – intellectual, social, psychological, physical, spiritual and religious. Retelling the positive events of a community’s story is also critical, because it reminds us of what we’re capable of and how to achieve it. It also reinforces the relational aspect of our identity, reminding us that each individual is part of a bigger story.

Cybersafety
This week Emma Tabacaru visited students in Year 5 and Year 6 to talk about about Cybersafety. The students said they found this talk very informative and eye-opening. It is so crucial for our students to be safe, informed and confident users of online technology, particularly with so many students having phones and regular access to ipads. Attached is an interesting article from a 12-year child about what it is like to be a student without a phone. Please click on this link to access the article.
Confirmation
On Wednesday night we had our Family Workshops for the Sacrament of Confirmation. It was a stormy night, so we were very grateful that most of our families braved the weather and attended! The family workshops are a core aspect to the preparation and a Parish requirement for formation and to communicate key information about the Sacrament. If you were unable to attend last Wednesday’s workshop, there will be a make-up session on Monday, September 11 at 4pm in the school hall. Please contact Gemma Ballantine via the Office or email to confirm your attendance.
There will be a Confirmation Commitment Mass on the Weekend of the 9th/ 10th of September. All students are expected to attend one Mass (in Kingscliff or Pottsville) over this weekend. It is a St Anthony’s Parish School Mass at the 9am Sunday Mass, so there will hopefully be many families there and Morning Tea afterwards.
The students are looking forward to their Confirmation Retreat day, which will be on Wednesday, September 13. We are blessed to have our CSYMA (Catholic Schools Youth Ministry Association) students from St Joseph’s, Banora Point, attending this day to help and support our students.
A reminder that the Sacrament of Confirmation will be Wednesday, October 11 at 6pm with our Bishop Greg Homeming.

National Science Week

Two weeks ago it was National Science Week. St Anthony's Primary School held a Science Fair in the hall on Thursday 17th August. The theme for this year's science fair was innovation powering future industries.
We had an amazing turnout of students with a total of 111 students, each with their own amazing projects! Each student should be proud of themselves. The winning projects were innovating Kitty's iPad (Phoenix, Charlie, Rylen, Trey), how to fire-proof a house (Harry and Gus), bee drones (Rafael Carroll-Cinque) and bioplastics (Poppy, Ally and Audrey). Congratulations to all the winning students for their incredible innovative ideas.

Confirmation

Next week our Year 3 students will start their 5-week preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Confirmation is where we are given the fruits and gifts of the Holy Spirit. We are challenged, throughout our life, to use these special gifts, to love and serve God and others and to make our world a better place. The Sacrament is available to Baptised students in Years 3-6. Some families have not enrolled their child via Compass, so this has been reopened until this Wednesday, August 23.
For your calendars, please remember these dates:

St Anthony's Parish - Care Group
Many parents may have noticed from the Parish Bulletin, that the Parish has a Care Group which, among other things seeks to provide meals to any parishoners in need.
This could include times of family sickness, new mums struggling to provide for the family in the early days of returning home, and many other circumstances of genuine need.
Please be aware that the Care Group is very willing to help out if any families find themselves in need of this service.
