Newsletter Term 2 Week 6 (2.6.23)
From the Principal
Dear Parents
The feedback from the School Review has been extremely positive. I would like to share some of the commendations:
- At St Anthony’s Primary School everyone is committed to every student’s success. Students say they are central to all learning and teaching and that the teachers make them feel safe as learners.
- There is a strong sense of belonging and pride in St Anthony’s Primary School. There is a whole school disposition supporting inclusion which recognises the dignity of the individual and this was expressed by all stakeholders.
- Significant human and physical resources have been prioritised and dedicated to best address the learning needs of students. Strategic investments in resourcing makes the best use of staff expertise and interests.
- Developed over time the staff work to ensure the continuity of a culture of collaboration and teamwork. Across multiple cohorts the staff are committed to whole school improvement and student growth. Teacher aides are highly valued and are equal members of the teams. Administration and support staff feel included and supported.
- Older students very confidently talked about their learning. Their ability to articulate learning goals, discuss the role feedback plays in their learning and the way they can agency with their learning was evident across the school. Learning teams across the school build student confidence in and ownership of learning.
- The school fosters a partnership with the parish which is mutually beneficial to support the faith community and evangelisation. The connection between the school and parish is strong and valued.
Having an external group go through all aspects of the school and make these commendations should make us all feel proud. We have certainly achieved so much and can feel validated in all the work we have done to get us to this point. The lead reviewer from ACER who has reviewed over 160 schools throughout the country told us he has not rated any school as highly as he did us in many areas. High praise indeed. We were given several recommendations to assist us in developing our school improvement plan for the next three years. They nearly all commence with the word “continue”. In other words, we are to keep doing what we are doing.
Don’t forget school photos next Monday. Full dress uniform is required, which includes black school shoes. Please ensure that children’s hair is neat and tidy, and tied back if it is long.
Tuesday will be a mufti day – wear something green to celebrate Environment Week. Students are asked to bring along a gold coin on this day to raise some funds for some stingless native bees. The environment group hope to set up some hives near our fruit trees.
Congratulations to all the AFL players who played in Byron last Tuesday. Our boys’ team were champions on the day and our girls’ team was placed 3rd. The boys will now compete on The Gold Coast early next term. We wish them well.
Please have a close look at all the sports news elsewhere in this newsletter. There is some key information about particular events pertaining to the Athletics carnival set down for Tuesday 20th June.
Monday 12th June is a public holiday so there will be a nice long weekend next weekend. Tuesday 13th June is the Feast of St Anthony. Mass will be at 9.00am. There will be some special activities set down for that day. Wednesday and Thursday of that week will be for Verse Speaking. Information and permission notes for this will be sent out on Compass next week.
This week is Reconciliation Week. The prayers we said at this morning’s assembly are included in this newsletter. As Christians we all have a responsibility to be accepting and inclusive of all. Our challenge is to love our neighbour and to listen to understand in order to seek reconciliation.
If you are not as close to God as you used to be, who moved?
Have a great weekend everyone.
God bless
Lynne
RECONCILIATION WEEK
This week we acknowledge the people of the Bundjalung nation and all Aboriginal people, and pay our respects to their elders both past and present, for they hold the memories, the culture and the wisdom upon which our nation’s future will be built
Prayer for Reconciliation Week.
Holy Father God of Love. You are the Creator of this land and all things good.
We acknowledge the pain and shame of our history and the suffering of our peoples.
Lord have mercy.
Holy Father God of Love. We thank you for the survival of Indigenous cultures.
Our hope is in you because Your son Jesus Christ came to reconcile the world to You.
Christ have mercy.
Holy Father God of Love. Teach us to respect all cultures.
Help us to bring about spiritual and social change.
Lord have mercy.
God of love and justice, we pray that our political, religious and community leaders act in the interests of all the people in this land…that they walk the talk of reconciliation. Lord hear us.
God of love and justice, we pray for those who still suffer sadness because of the government policies of the past…may they be healed by us walking the talk of your Gospel command to love one another. Lord hear us.
God of love and justice, we pray for those who are ostracised because they walk the talk of reconciliation. May our nation encourage and celebrate their work. Lord hear us.
The Aboriginal Our Father
You are Our Father, You live in Heaven. We talk to You. You are good.
We believe your word Father. We your children, give us bread today.
We have done wrong, we are sorry. Help us Father not to sin again.
Others have done wrong to us and we are sorry for them Father today.
Stop us from doing wrong Father. Save us from the evil one.
You are Our Father, You live in Heaven. We talk to you. You are good.
Lord open up our hearts so that we may hear the message You teach of a world in which the wrongs of the past are recognised – a world in which a reconciled people walk and talk together sharing stories; a world in which all burn with the desire to have your peace and justice reign.
We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

AFLQ Schools Cup Gala Day
On Tuesday 30th May students from Years 4, 5 and 6 travelled to Byron Bay to compete in the annual AFLQ Schools Cup Gala Day.
St Anthony’s had 1 boys and 1 girls team participate in the competition.
The boys team started strong winning both their round games convincingly which allowed them to finish top of their pool and they progressed to the final.
They played Lindisfarne Grammar School, it was an extremely close game throughout but the team finished strong winning the game by 1 point. Congratulations to the team who now progresses onto the regional finals in Week 1, Term 3 in Carrara on the Gold Coast.
Many thanks to Mr Glenn Elliot and Mr Ben Rogers who coached the team on the day. We appreciate you giving up your time to travel to Byron Bay.
The girls team trained hard before the gala day to learn all the skills and gameplay needed to compete. With only 3 students experienced in the sport of AFL they girls did a fantastic job to work as a team and win their first game against St Ambrose. They lost their second game against a very experienced team, but finishing 2nd in their pool allowed them to play off for 3rd and 4th position.
After a brilliant game where they secured the ball in their attacking half for most of the game the girls won and placed 3rd overall in the competition. What an achievement, well done girls.
Many thanks to Mr Judd who coached the team on the day.
